Gluten-Free Chocolate Banana Waffles

The smell of waffles reminds me of the diner I frequented as a kid. The fresh smell of the batter hitting the hot waffle iron, eating that first bite with a drip of maple syrup and for me, the sweet taste of chocolate. These waffles evoke those happy memories for me. And of course, Chocolate Banana Waffles are just plain delicious. They’re a little bit like chocolate banana bread but in waffle form.

Guess what else I love about this recipe? It’s freezer-friendly. Make a double or triple batch now and have waffles for a quick morning breakfast. Our recipe serves 4, but it can easily be doubled or tripled and the waffles can be kept warm in a low oven to keep hot before serving! Ready to make them?

Substitutions

We know lots of readers have issues with bananas. The bananas are essential for this particular waffle recipe, but if you are looking for a recipe without bananas, check out our Pumpkin Waffle recipe, this Mini Waffle recipe or this Gluten-free Pancake recipe that can just as easily be made into waffles.

We haven’t tried this without eggs, but suspect they will work with prepared flax eggs!

Feel free to use any milk that works for your family here! We’ve tried almond, boxed coconut milk and cow’s milk and had no issue with any.

We haven’t tried this recipe with any other flour, but we’ve had great success swapping almond flour with oat flour in other recipes. If you do give that a try here, and you find the mixture dry (compared to the photo we’ve shared above) feel free to add in a tablespoon more milk at a time until it seems like a good consistency.

As always, let us know if you’ve made any swaps for your waffles in the comments below!

How to Make Gluten-Free Chocolate Waffles

What I love most about this recipe is that it’s made all in one bowl! Start by mashing the banana, then whisk together all of the wet ingredients, and finally add in the dry ingredients. Because there is no gluten here, there is no worry about the waffles being tough from overmixing. Once you’ve mixed the batter, heat up your waffle iron and cook according to the appliance instructions. Just make sure to spray well with a high-heat cooking spray!

How to Freeze Them

You can serve the waffles immediately, or let it cool completely and freeze. Waffles will keep frozen for up to 3 months. To reheat place in a toaster oven until heated through.

  1. 5 stars
I’ve made many waffles over my 11 years of marriage (mostly not gluten free) but my husband said these are by far the best waffles I’ve ever made!

  2. 5 stars
These are seriously the best waffles ever. Made them again today for my son’s 21st bday breakfast. Loved bananas and strawberries on top. But during the holidays they were the bomb with a squirt of Aldi’s peppermint whipped cream on top …not dairy free 😉

  3. Hi Lexi,
My daughter dislikes banana’s very much, is there something I can use in place of the banana in this recipe?

    Thank you

  4. Ok so I may or may not be obsessed with @lexiscleankitchen and all of her posts and I may or may not have gotten a waffle maker this weekend so I could try this recipe. I followed this recipe exactly and it was amazing! The waffles did stick a little but I could have been my waffle maker needed to be greased more or I might have needed to cook them longer. Still I got them out and stacked them up. And then devoured them. My roommate who doesn’t eat paleo or even gluten free for that matter asked to try them. She made waffles but used bisquick. She took one bite and was like oh my god these are amazing. She thought they tasted like chocolate banana bread. And wished she had just used this recipe instead. Now she is hooked. I love being able to make paleo and gluten free things that still have amazing taste and that don’t sacrifice flavor. Lexi’s recipes never disappoint me and are filled with flavor and you wouldn’t even know they are paleo unless someone told you. I’ve had so much success with her stuff that I come here first before I make something. Trying out recipes gets expensive and it stinks when they don’t turn out. Lexi’s recipes work and taste good. I never have to throw anything out and I trust that her recipes work. If you haven’t tried this one you have to to! It’s perfect for any meal!

  5. I made double chocolate banana waffle for my breakfast, I enjoyed it till the end. I can’t wait for a repeat. The chocolate oozes in the mouth. Yum yum!!! Thanks Lexi for a wonderful recipe and inspiration on your recipes…

  6. Just found you today! I’m 3 days away from finishing my first Whole30 challenge and I’ve really discovered allot about myself and food. I’m really going to enjoy you site! Thanks!!!
