Usually Saturday or Sunday mornings mean recipe development for the blog. This also usually means baking chocolatey-goodness or some sort of paleo-friendly treat that I just have to taste test over and over.


5 Ingredient Grain-Free Dog Treats

The past few weekends however were extra special, because little Jax got to be the real taste-tester. Let’s be real, Mike and I tried them too, of course, but the real test was our puppy- and it passed the test with flying colors! So, instead of your traditional Foodie Friday with myself and American Express, this one is for all the dogs out there!


The best part about these, aside from them being packed with nutrients, is that the dough yields up to/if not more 60 dog cookies (depending on your cookie cutter size)! Seriously so much better than spending $10-15 on 20 grain-free cookies! PLUS, you need only 5 ingredients. Total win all around.

That is one happy puppy. He was ready to sit, roll over, throw his paws up, and pull out every trick in his book for these. His eyes lit up way more than with his usual treats!

Optional add-ins

  • 1/3 cup shredded carrots
  • 2 tsp dried parsley


  • Preheat oven to 350
  • In a mixing bowl combine all ingredients and form dough into a ball
  • Roll out dough in between two sheets of parchment paper*
  • Gently use your desired cookie cutters to cut and lift cookies into ideal shape**
  • Transfer to a lined baking sheet
  • Bake for 12-15 minutes or until cookies are hard
  • Let cool completely before serving

    This has me thinking of a doggy birthday cookie cake for this newly 6-month old pup (his birthday was yesterday). I made him two massive cookies and sandwiched them between peanut butter. Happy, happy birthday puppy!

        I thought these were perfect for my dog because she is allergic to wheat but then I saw the eggs (allergic to them also). I think I will try substituting them with applesauce.

          Use Flaxseed instead of eggs! to use flaxseed meal as an egg replacer in recipes for muffins, cakes, cookies, and pancakes, use one tablespoon of flaxseed meal (grind in coffee grinder or blender/processor) and 3 tablespoons of liquid to replace each egg called for in the recipe. You can also reduce the flour in a recipe by up to 25 percent and replace it with ground flaxseed. Flaxseed meal can provide a nutritional punch to many baked goods. Add flaxseed meal to bread, pancakes, muffins, bars, cookies and other recipes for extra nutrition and a nutty flavor. Replace oil or shortening in a recipe with ground flaxseed. Substitute flaxseed at a 3:1 ratio for best results.

            My dogs love the treats. I think it rolls out best when chilled a bit. I’ll do that next time for the whole batch.
            Instead of canned pumpkin/sweet potato, I used fresh sweet potatoes and microwaved them. They were organic, so I pureed them with the skins on and added the eggs toward the end in order to finely mash/puree them.

        i went to culinary school and if we were allergic to eggs we would use apple sauce inplace of eggs. hope that helps

        You can try Chia Seed as an egg substitute. Or ground flax (chia stays fresher longer and does not need to be ground) One tablespoon seed or ground flax to three tablespoons water. Let it sit to gel up a bit. Proceed!

      If I’m using a Demarle at Home silicone mold do I add more egg and oil or just eggs.

    12. Hello!! I just used your recipe as a platform for my dog treats.. i added spent grain and barley and used almond butter and carrots instead of the peanut butter and sweet potato puree. My dog, Diamond, is obsessed!!!!

      How much applesauce is used to substitute for the eggs?
      Also, do these harden a good bit? I’m hoping they hold together well.

      If anyone has a good recipe for “icing” that hardens to decorate the treats, please let me know! I would like to make these pretty for a fundraising event, but I have not had much success with finding the right combo of ingredients.

      I have made this recipe twice. I have to say my dogs love them so much. My question is are they supposed to be crunchy like a dog biscuit? I made them about the same thickness as you have in the pic and I baked them on 375 but they are not crunchy. More like a firm cost cookie. My dogs love them either way it is just for my own OCD lol.

      I tried making this recipe today but couldn’t get the dough to be at a consistency to allow you to roll it out or cut shapes. I added more flour which helped to thicken but still not the right consistency. I’m baking little blobs now – we’ll see how they turn out!

      I made these treats today for my clients dogs but they didn’t get hard. The dogs love them but fall apart. Is there something I can do so they stay together? I didn’t melt the coconut oil. I would love to make them again.

        You can refrigerate for longer storing but they don’t need to be. In an air tight container they keep up to 2 weeks. In the fridge you can get another week out of them!

      Since I used 1/3 hemp flour and flax meal for eggs, the dough was very soft. I rolled small balls and flattened them with a pretty glass bottom! wonderful! dipped in water every couple cookies. thanks for this great nourishing recipe – I will be sharing these with shelter pups and mine!

      I do make homemade treats for my furbaby. I like 2 use quinoa flour, organic apples or apple sauce, bananas, peanut butter, honey, coconut oil. I also boil hamburger or turkey & mix with brown rice, peas, carrots, beans to mix with his dog food a couple of times a week since I learned that vegetables are so good for them.       If a dog is allergic to wheat soy and grain. Can you use certain flour? I am making these for a friend’s dog don’t want to take.a.chance to harm the dog so I guess the question I have is what is considered a grain flour

          My dog is not only allergic to wheat – so it has to be grain free but because he also has a high yeast issue – he cannot have anything with sugars – so peanut butter, sweet potatoes and regular potatoes are also out of the picture. Does anyone have any other recipes which would be grain-free and no sugar items?

            How many biscuits does this make and must they be refrigerated. Also can you substitute applesauce for the eggs and a variety of flours? Trying to be grain free. Doing a first birthday party for 11 Dalmatian puppies on July 30 and want to do treat bags. These sound good but it would be too many to have to refrigerate send I need to make several dozen!

      Made these today with leftover sweet potatoes – my puppy loves the flavor! Added the parsley, as it gave it some color (and flavor) but no carrots. I may have made them too thick because they were hard to remove from the mold, so they had to cook longer. Next time will try to make them thinner. I used both a bone mold as well as a small circle mold to see which came out better. They both work well, but I cooked both longer than the recipe called for to try to get them crunchy. I will freeze these as someone recommended so they are fresh and also help with teething! Thanks for the recipe!! 🙂

I have made treats in the past and they mold super quick so I have to keep them in the fridge. Do these need to be stored in the fridge or are they ok to keep in a cookie jar or tin? 🙂 thanks!       I tried these cookies and followed the recipe but was disappointed when they came put soft broken and didn’t hold up like the ones in your picture. They also started to spoil after a few days in a air tight container.

        That’s odd, Ramona. Did you follow exactly? Everyone has great results with this recipe!
        P.S. Some people prefer to store these in the fridge depending on where they live/temperatures.

      Hi, Just a few questions? what thickness do you usually roll yours out to? Also any suggestions on getting even thickness for the dough? I always have uneven thickness with dough. Finally how do you mix? With a hand mixer, stand mixer with dough attachment or just with a wooden spoon by hand? Thanks!!!

        Hi! Roughly 1/4 inch. I roll it out with a rolling pin. Doesn’t have to be TOTALLY 100% even (your dog won’t notice ;)) I mix these by hand!

      If your pet has egg allergies, you can make a valid substitute with chia seeds. I’m including a link that tells you how. Works in lots of recipes.

      Silly question, when you say coconut oil do you mean for it to be soft or melted? I had to add way more flour to make this mixture hold.

      • I melted the coconut oil slightly – otherwise it wouldn’t incorporate with the other ingredients very well. Lexi, can you advise on melting vs. not melting? I think melting it helped things come together, although I had the same problem with the dough not holding well. And then with all the extra flour, it was so crumbly that it was hard to roll out. I’ll try again with a little less flour and see if they crumble less.

      I did not melt the coconut oil cuz the recipe doesn’t say to and they came out crumbly. Followed the recipe exactly. I ended up just making little dough balls and using a fork to push them down to make little coin biscuits. I’m making them for a fundraiser. After baking, there are holes in the biscuits where the oil was. I mixed the oil in as best as I could, but some chunks still made it through. Maybe the next batch I will try melting the oil first….

      For those dogs that are allergic to eggs I recommend psyllium husk.
      Approximately one table spoon (or 9 g) of psyllium plus 2 table spoons of hot water (the heat “activates” the husks to form a gel) substitutes 1 egg.
      In case you use the finer powder, half of the amount might be enough (I used whole husks).
      In my opinion, psyllium works better than chia or flax, because it also works a bit like gluten and “glues” the dough together.

      I can’t wait to try this recipe…what i have learnt from baking dog treats so far is..the drier you bake biscuits the longer they will last because moisture is what causes the mould…Baking for longer at a lower temp or dehydrating after baking will give you a longer shelf life……..so will adding salt or using margarine…but that defeats the healthy option…. hope this helps….

      Been making these treats for about a year now. My 1st batch came out a bit soft so I’ve been going thinner on the dough and cooking longer at about 30-50 degrees lower. Just to let everyone know this not like cookie dough. I flatten out smaller amounts between a gallon freezer bag with the top and sides cut off , less counter destruction. After I cut out the shapes I use a paring knife to unstick & lift each treat onto the cookie sheet. Yes you want to fully melt the coconut flour. When putting the ingredients together mix the wet first. You can use a hand or electric whisk for the wet but when you go to add the dry I find it works best to use your hands (I put on gloves for this part. I hope these few suggestions help.

      I looked thru all the commetns before asking… thoughts on almond flour vs coconut flour? I’m guessing use more almond flour, just wondering if anyone has tried that?

      I know! Lol that’s why I was hoping someone had already tried it, plus I have way more almond flour than coconut. Well my batches of the recipe posted are coming out now. Wow super different to work with then flour….. I’m not familiar enough working with coconuflour to adjust weirdness….. so the dough is moist, but crumbly…. could press between patch paper but in the end had to just ball up and thumb down and press edges to not crack. I even threw the entire batch back in the mixer and added another egg and some EV 00 and water! And it’s just not letting me roll it out and easily cut out the shapes. Hmmmm, it’s an adventure and a work in progress evening! Lmao

      always make sure the peanut butter you use (or anything really) doesn’t contain “xylitol” which is toxic to pets!
