Learn how to make a DIY Chlorine Neutralizer Spray, also known as a Vitamin C swim spray, to neutralize the harmful effects of chlorine this summer! Budget-friendly and quick to make it’s a game-changer for all of your pool-filled adventures.
What is Chlorine Neutralizer Spray?
This pool chlorine neutralizer is a simple spray that helps neutralize or negate the harmful effects of chlorine found in public pools with the use of vitamin C! Vitamin C breaks down chlorine. I’ve been using it for my kids after swim lessons, and it really helps to prevent and relieve some of the noticeable effects of chlorine exposure, like itching and dryness. ⠀⠀
When combined with chlorine, vitamin C forms hydrochloric acid and dehydroascorbic acid, which destroys harmful toxins in chlorine.
You can find chlorine neutralizers online and in some grocery and sporting stores. However, it’s super easy to make at home, and inexpensive!
How to Make Chlorine Neutralizer Spray
Ingredients You’ll Need
*Scroll down to the recipe card for the full details, but you can also find everything here in my Amazon Store!
- Filtered Water – We use an RO water filter, and filter regular tap water. You can read al about What I Learned When We Revamped Our Tap Water and why I’m so passionate about it.
- Sodium Ascorbate (vitamin C powder) – This neutralizes chlorine without any negative side effects.
Tools You’ll Need:
- What I Learned When We Revamped Our Tap Water
- Glass Spray Bottle – I use this spritzer bottle to cover our bodies easily. Then, I like to keep these smaller bottles on hand when we’re traveling or at the pool!
- Mini Funnel – This just makes sure the water and vitamin C make their way into the bottle without spilling!
- Measuring Spoon – to measure your vitamin C powder!
Instructions
- Combine. Place a mini funnel over a glass spray bottle. Pour the water and sodium ascorbate into the bottle.
- Shake. Screw the lid on tightly, and vigorously shake to combine. Your swim spray is ready to go!
How to Use It
Once the spray is prepared, simply spritz it all over your body before and after chlorine exposure!
Avoid Eyes
Just be careful to avoid spraying it directly on the face and in the eyes, especially when using it on children!
Health Concerns When It Comes to Chlorine
It’s no secret that many swimming pools and public swimming areas use chlorine to kill bacteria and viruses in the water. However, the chemical is so strong that it can have negative impacts on our health.
You may notice immediate reactions like dry skin, red eyes, or skin rashes after swimming. However, chlorine can have many more, often longer-lasting effects including:
- Dry hair
- Difficulty breathing
- Dental erosion
- Types of cancer
- Cardiovascular disease
- Allergies
Of course, it’s important to shower after swimming. However, chlorine can chemically bind to our skin and hair, meaning a shower isn’t always enough to get rid of it!
That’s where chlorine spray comes into play. Spraying it all over your body before swimming can help prevent chlorine from clinging to your skin and mitigate the harmful effects so you can have fun in the pool all summer long!
FAQs
There are two types of vitamin C you can use for this spray including ascorbic acid and sodium ascorbate. Both work equally well.
I use sodium ascorbate because ascorbic acid is much more acidic and can irritate sensitive skin. It also doesn’t mix as quickly as sodium ascorbate, but it does tend to be cheaper. So, choose whichever option works best for your needs and budget.
Yes! I don’t see any reason not to, and it’s a great way to prevent chlorine from clinging to your hair.
Swim spray only stays fresh for 3-5 days. So, you’ll want to make a batch weekly. Luckily, it only takes about a minute to do and you’ll have plenty of the Sodium ascorbate powder to do so! With that said, you can also half this recipe!
More Ways to Avoid Chlorine
- Coconut oil can also act as a protective barrier from chlorine. So, I like to lather myself and my little ones before using the chlorine-neutralizing spray to avoid dry skin.
- Also, be sure to still shower after swimming. We like to do detox baths with Epsom salt!
- Do not spray directly on the face or in the eyes, especially for children.
