Everything You Need to Know About Safer Sunscreen

If you consistently lather up with sunscreen before spending time outdoors, you’re probably already feeling like you’re ahead of the game. And you kind of are! According to CBS News, only one-third of people apply sunscreen to all of their exposed skin (per medical recommendations). Being in a consistent routine with safer sunscreen — especially in the summertime — is absolutely a victory.

But there’s more to sunscreen than you’ve heard about from advertising… and maybe even from your dermatologist. While mainstream, readily available sun protection brands do have a pretty good track record of minimizing risk of skin cancer (for those who use it properly, of course!), they aren’t exactly doing you any other favors health-wise, and people are starting to notice.

P.S. More recently, chemical filters in sunscreens have been linked to the killing off of coral reefs. It’s why Hawaii, and recently Florida have newly passed a bill to ban these types of sunscreens from being sold in the state.

Everything You Need to Know About Safer Sunscreen

There’s more to it than the SPF number

Here’s a fact you’ve probably never even thought about: Many of the sunscreens you’re probably most familiar with are known as chemical sunblocks. These products actually absorb into your skin, ultimately absorbing UV rays so they can be converted into heat and released from your body. Active ingredients in these sunscreens typically include avobenzone, octinoxate, and oxybenzone. Think about it for a sec — if these chemical sunscreens are to work properly, those chemicals need to be fully absorbed into your body. Do you want your skin absorbing things that are known to be harmful to your health, or just anything that you can’t even pronounce? No, thanks.

If you are unsure of the ingredients in the sunscreen you thought was decent, EWG.org/skindeep is my go-to resource to search and learn about the ingredients in my products. You simply search an item, and see it’s toxicity rating based on the ingredients and can read about why those ingredients aren’t good for you. It’s pretty awesome!

Now, all of this isn’t to scare you! The good news is that you don’t have to avoid sunscreen altogether in order to avoid these chemicals, and the answer is certainly not to stop wearing sunscreen. There are alternatives! It’s a good thing, too, because I want to help you preserve your healthy skin and stay glowing and ageless forever.

Safer Sunscreen Guide

Is mineral sunscreen better than chemical?

The best alternative for chemical sunscreen is a category of sun protection called mineral sunscreen.

Look for mineral sunscreens that feature zinc and titanium dioxide as their active ingredients, rather than the chemicals present in most conventional products. This makes your sunscreen a lot cleaner and safer. Mineral sunscreens use these active ingredients to physically block the rays from your skin — they actually reflect the suns rays. As an added bonus, many mineral sunscreens are fragrance-free, which is a win for babies, kids, and anyone with sensitive skin and can help you further streamline the dangerous chemicals being absorbed into your body.

Ingredients you should avoid when searching for sunscreen are:

  • Oxybenzone
  • Octinoxate
  • Retinyl Palmitate
  • Fragrance

The best mineral sunscreens

My personal pick for my family is Beautycounter’s sunscreen line, Countersun.

Here’s why: Beautycounter just happens to be the market leader in safer, mineral sunscreen. I trust them for their skincare, make-up, and mission, and their triple-tested Countersun line is no different, (plus it’s reef safe)! Beautycounter’s sunscreen offers all of the benefits of sun protection without the dangers associated with many of the products you can buy at your local pharmacy or grocery store. Please, do your research when you pick up that sunscreen that looks good in CVS!

Countersun (Beautycounter’s mineral sunscreen line) has a lotion, a non-aerosol mist, and a face stick, and the line now includes tinted sunscreens — a little extra glow, anyone? — and an aftersun cooling gel, to help ease the pain of a little too much time spent catching rays. Basically, all of your bases are now officially covered… and a lot more safely!

Here’s a handful of other miner sunscreen options that pass the test:

Beautycounter Sunscreen

Here are a few of my go-to tips for applying Beautycounter’s safer mineral sunscreen:

Just because these products are great (which they are) doesn’t mean that they can prevent 100% of sunburns. Mineral sunscreen and chemical sunscreen are quite different, and user error is a real thing in the world of sun protection.

1. Re-apply! Sunscreen is not a one and done proposition. Even the best of these products needs to be re-applied on a regular basis, usually according to the instructions on the package.  Adding another layer of protection approximately every hour or two is probably a safe bet (pun intended!). Be extra careful if you’re spending a lot of time in the water. Water resistant is not the same as waterproof, so make sure to reapply after or taking a dip or sweating on a run!

2. Application must be visible. Mineral sunscreen can only do their job if you can actually see where they’ve been applied on your skin. Before you start the process of rubbing in your sunscreen, make sure that the sheer-white formula (or the new tinted formula!) is visible on your body. We’re not talking about a clear mist here!

3. Zinc does not expire. Zinc is one of the active ingredients in mineral sunscreen, and as if its ability to fight the sun’s dangerous rays wasn’t enough to sell you on it, it also never expires as a protective agent! This means that it will be effective for years after purchase. All sun protection products are required by law to list an expiration date, but if you’re using a mineral sunscreen, time isn’t of the essence. If your safer sunscreen stash lasts longer than expected, it will keep working!

4. Shake before use. Zinc can settle in the sunscreen’s packaging, so wake it up a bit before applying with a little shake! Doing this will ensure that zinc — AKA your sun protective agent — is distributed evenly every time you lather up, keeping your glow even and your whole body safe.

Generally speaking, I encourage you to never underestimate the sun. It is so powerful, and even the best of sunscreens won’t help if you’re not sure to use them properly. Be careful, be safe, and have fun in the sun!

Why I Stopped Using Drugstore Deodorant

For as long as I’d been using deodorant (AKA most of my life), I’d been using random deodorants from the drugstore. Well, until I made a major discovery: while deodorant may not seem like a huge deal, it is actually one of the biggest ways you can contribute to your toxic buildup. I have now talked about safer home swaps I’ve madewhy I switched my cleaning products, and why I ditched dryer sheets, but today, let’s talk about why I stopped using drugstore deodorant and about alternatives that actually work.

As someone with a specific set of detox issues (hello, MTHFR gene mutation!), it’s especially important for me to consider the toxic load in my environment. And this is a bigger issue now than ever, thanks to pollution, processed food, drinking water, personal products, and more. It’s really important for all of us — even if you don’t share my detox issues— to take control of the things we can in our bodies and homes to minimize toxic load.

Best Natural Deodorants

It’s no secret that I really care about what we put in and on our bodies, which are designed to absorb the products we apply to them. I choose to be a voice for all of this because it’s been way too long since a necessary law has been passed to police all of this, and ingredients banned elsewhere are still in our products here in the U.S. The worst part? It’s well-known and well-documented that many of the ingredients in our products are linked to cancer, endocrine disrupters, and more. I’m not trying to scare you — just to educate you so we can all do better for ourselves and our families!

I have used natural deodorant for years, and I’ve tried so many…

Basically, if it’s been on the market, I’ve given it a shot, and more often than not, I haven’t been impressed. I didn’t personally have much luck with Tom’s, Crystal Stone, or Schmitt’s. Even my husband — who was on the search for a natural alternative, too — gave up for a while. It’s been years of experiments over here! (For what it’s worth, I’ve heard good things about Native Deodorant recently. I haven’t tried it myself and it seems a little pricey, but you deserve to hear all the options!)

Fast forward through all of those experiments and letdowns, and — good news! — we’ve both found a natural, safer deodorant that actually works. It has ingredients we can feel good about putting on our pits! We now use Primally Pure deodorant, which is filled with good-for-you ingredients like tallow from grass-fed cows and organic and fair trade coconut oil. It’s all pure and natural enough to eat…. though I probably wouldn’t recommend that!

  • I use the Blue Tansy or Lemongrass varieties
  • My hubby Mike uses Charcoal
  • My mom uses Lavender
  • Kelli likes Blue Tansy, and she’s gotten her hubby John hooked on Charcoal!

Natural Deodorant

Adjusting to Natural Deodorant

Primally Pure deodorant, and other natural deodorants, are not antiperspirants. What does that mean? It means it’s going to take some time for you to adjust! When you have used chemicals to block your sweat glands for so many years, transitioning to all natural is going to require some patience. Primally Pure deodorant, specifically, has a cumulative effect, so the longer you use it, the better it works!

Sweat is a HEALTHY and NORMAL part of being human. I know, I know — you don’t want to have sweaty pits all day, but here’s the deal: since this product doesn’t contain any of the toxic chemicals found in conventional deodorants, it won’t interfere with your body’s natural and necessary detoxification process. Things are going to be sweaty at first! Your body will balance out though, and then you’ll be good to go. Based on my experience, I’d give your body thirty days to get used to natural deodorant. For some people the detox stage is shorter!

Red Flags to Look for in Your Deodorant

Here are a few of the icky chemicals you can find in your go-to drugstore deodorant…

  • Aluminum blocks your pores to prevent sweat and keep you dry all day long. It’s also linked to Alzheimer’s disease and heavy metal toxicity.
  • Paragons are endocrine/hormone disruptors, found in 99% of breast cancer tissue sampled in this study.
  • Propylene glycol is a fragrance, skin conditioner, and absorption enhancer that’s linked to organ toxicity and skin irritations. And because it improves product penetration, it helps to carry other harmful ingredients in the product through the skin. Oh, it’s also found in anti-freeze and is classified as skin irritant by the EWG. Yikes.
  • Phthalates are endocrine disruptors linked to permanent birth defects.
  • Triclosa is an antibacterial agent and preservative that is linked to liver toxicity, skin allergies, and thyroid dysfunction.
  • Fragrances, which are cocktails of chemicals that create skin sensitivities and irritations. They are among the most toxic ingredients you’ll find, even on “natural deodorant” labels.

Primally Pure deodorants

Do your own research!

Here’s the thing: there’s so much we cannot control in the world, but for the things we can – and use daily — why wouldn’t we do a little research and make safer swaps for ourselves and our families? At the very least, we should be aware of what is in them!

I use two main resources in our home to identify how toxic our products are. One is EWG.ORG/SKINDEEP and the other is the Think Dirty APP. With each, you can scan barcodes or search ingredients in your home and see how toxic or non-toxic your current products are. Pretty cool, right?

Spoiler alert: it can be slightly terrifying when you start scanning your products, because everything may suddenly seem dangerous! Don’t forget that you can make small changes, and that doing your best is what matters. I’m not advocating you throw out every product in your home right now. Instead, get informed. Once you are, you can make better choices! Ingredients DO matter, and with a product you apply every single day (sometimes even multiple times a day!) these toxic ingredients can build up in your body. The best thing you can do is read, research, and learn your product labels.

FAQ’s from my friends at Primally Pure:

Q: Will the deodorant stain my clothes?

A: Typically, if our customers are noticing residue left on their clothing, the product is being applied too liberally.  Our products are super concentrated and made with the purest of ingredients, so two light swipes is plenty for maximum odor protection!

Q: I’ve tried natural deodorant before and it gave me a rash. Will that happen with Primally Pure deodorant?

A: Irritation is most likely caused by the baking soda in natural deodorants, as some people are more sensitive to it. Our deodorant contains only a small percentage of this super odor eliminator, along with other pit pampering, odor-fighting ingredients.  Although there is a small percentage of people who will react to any amount of baking soda, we’ve found that most people who have experienced irritation from other brands can handle our formula just fine. We also have our amazing Everything Spray, that can be used as a pit refresher + so much more (take a peek at 5 Effective Ways To Use Our Everything Spray).

Q: I tried a different natural deodorant brand once and felt like it didn’t work. How is this one different?

A: We believe the education behind WHY nontoxic is important outweighs certain detox results such as sweat + smell, which typically always subside. Our deodorant formula protects against odor pretty darn well.  With smell, this WILL get better. Much better. And if it doesn’t, it may be time to consider making some dietary changes and eliminate processed food. Regular exercise can also help the body to detox and minimize BO! How To Beat Dry Winter Skin!

Is anyone else feeling the impact from Winter? My skin has been exceptionally dry this year, so I thought I’d share what I’m doing this year to beat dry winter skin! Everything from skincare to sleep, and all things in between!

Snowy Lake Day and How To Beat Dry Winter Skin

So, How do you get rid of dry skin on your face?

Upgrade Your Skincare Routine:

  • Cleanse: In the winter months especially, I use a mild-yet-hydrating, non-foaming cleanser twice a day to cleanse my skin of dirt and make-up. Washing my skin twice a day has made a huge difference in my complexion. My daily cleanser is this one, and I bust out the big guns (not cheap, but a little goes a long way) when my skin is VERY dry. Also, when your skin is dry, use warm water over very hot water.
  • Tone: Don’t skip the toner! It balances your pH levels. I love using these toner pads and this everything spray for a moisture bonus bomb on my skin!
  • Exfoliate: I exfoliate 2-3 times a week normally, and 4 times a week in winter months. I don’t love the Beautycounter exfoliator as I personally like a heavy duty one. Here’s the scrub exfoliator I love (or grab it from Sephora)!
  • Face Oils: I LIVE for face oils. I used to be afraid of putting oil on my acne-prone skin, but it is a total game changer. I switch off between the Balancing #3 oil and this Fancy Face Serum.
  • Moisturize: When I am super dry, I’ll add a moisturizer on-top of my oils before bed! I’ll use my cleansing balm as a moisturizer or this night cream!
  • Don’t forget your lips: Don’t forget dry lips! This is my favorite lip balm, and you can get 10% off your Primally Pure order with code LEXI
  • Bonus: Face masks to the rescue! My two favorite masks right now are: Charcoal Balancing Mask and these Brighten & Tighten Sheet Masks! I use a mask 2-3x a week and notice a huge difference in my skin!

How can I keep my skin hydrated during winter?

Add Moisture To Your Environment:

  • Use a humidifier to add more moisture to your environment. I have my running in our bedroom at night. Here are two great options:

How can I hydrate myself?

  • Drink more water: Bringing a reusable water bottle around with you! This is the #1 small thing I do to drink more water daily and it changed the game for me! When I don’t have mine with me, I drink much less! Tip: infuse your water with mint, lemon, or cucumber for added flavor and nutrients!
  • What foods are good for your dry skin? Eat hydrating foods such as:
    • Veggies (like cucumber, celery, cauliflower, spinach, lettuce, and carrots)
    • Soups
    • Broths to sip on
    • Green juices
    • Fruits like watermelon and cantaloupe
    • Fatty fish such as salmon and tuna contain high amounts of omega-3 fatty acids that are good for your skin
    • Eat other sources of vitamin C, such as strawberries, broccoli, and spinach
    • Healthy fats and oils, like avocado, nuts (rich in vitamin E), olive oil, and coconut oil
  • Avoid dehydrating beverages/foods: Avoid drinks with artificial sweeteners, like sodas and fruit juices! Avoid the candy and chip aisles, and remember that alcohol and caffeine can dehydrate the body as well, so consume in moderation!

What About The Rest of Your Body:

  • Dry brushing: Dry brushing takes all of 2 minutes and is a great way to enhance blood circulation and remove dead skin cells1 When done regularly, dry brushing is known to stimulate the lymphatic system (allowing the body to rid itself of toxic build-up), exfoliate the skin, remove dead skin cells and stimulate the growth of new ones! Simple rub your body with the dry brush before showering. Begin with your extremities and gently move towards the heart in upward, circular strokes. I use this dry brush.
  • Exfoliate in the shower: I love this body scrub! It’s perfect for exfoliating and removing dead skin. I use it twice a week!
  • Get a gentle, safe body wash: Let’s take a vow this year to stop putting toxic products on our biggest organ of our body, our skin! Grab a safer body wash. This is the body wash we absolutely love. My entire family uses it, men included!
  • Moisturize right after the shower: I love the Primally Pure body oil in Lemongrass and Blue Tansy, and also love their body butter in Almond + Vanilla.
  • Moisturize your feet: If your feet get dry and crack like mine do, before bed, use your bhttp://bit.ly/2KS4p4Mody butter on your feet and cover them with socks!

Get Enough Sleep:

Getting a full night’s sleep to help to restore the skin’s moisture balance, fight inflammation (a biggie during cold season), and stimulate collagen.

Get Moving:

Exercise helps get your blood flowing! When your blood flow is boosted, nourishment is sent to skin cells, reestablishing a radiant complexion and minimizing the effects of inflammation.

I hope that was helpful! XOXO!

Swap THIS for THAT: Clean Beauty Products To Try Right Now

Living a healthy lifestyle is more than just eating healthy. It can be overwhelming to think about swapping out your conventional products for clean beauty products, but scroll down for a list of simple swaps I’ve made in my home that have helped us make the change easy.

Lexi holding clean beauty brands of deodorantClean Beauty Products to Swap Right Now

Eating clean isn’t the only part of a healthy lifestyle. Our environment plays a big role too. What we put ON our bodies, what we use in our homes or environments, and even the relationships we keep, are just as important as the food that we put IN our bodies. The same goes for how we treat ourselves. Self-care is essential and setting boundaries within this technological world we live in is needed, though difficult.
I’m going to start this swap series, with this first post of Clean Beauty Products to Try Right Now! These products are changes I’ve made for me and my family in our own home.

We can do our best to reduce our toxic load, but without driving ourselves too, too crazy. Am I right? Believe me, it’s easy to do that. We now read labels and rid our home of toxic chemicals (as best as we can, not perfect).

Clean Beauty Brands We Use in Our Home:

Dove Body Wash —> Beautycounter Body Wash in Citrus Mimosa

Have you read the ingredients in your body wash? Mike was actually the first one out of the two of us to give it a glance. He was horrified! The new body was we are using is extremely gentle and non-drying with a creamy texture! It has rich and nourishing marula and mongongo oils, which are ingredients that help soften and protect skin while sealing in moisture. Mike loves the smell, too!

Secret Deodorant —> Primally Pure Deodorant

A natural deodorant that works, and I’ve tried them ALL! No aluminum for me, please and thank you! Primally Pure deodorant will keep you smelling fresh all day long while also pampering your pits with good-for-you ingredients (like tallow from grass-fed cows and organic + fair trade coconut oil) that are pure and natural enough to eat!

Primally Pure deodorant is not an antiperspirant – sweat is a HEALTHY and NORMAL part of being human! And since this product doesn’t contain any of the toxic chemicals found in conventional deodorants, it won’t interfere with your body’s natural and necessary detoxification process (also known as sweating).  IMPORTANT INFO: Adjusting to 100% natural deodorant may take some time – be patient! 🙂 The good news? Primally Pure deodorant has a cumulative effect – the longer you use it, the better it works!

Conventional Cleaning Products —> Branch Basics

On occasion I’ll whip out the heavy duty stuff if it’s URGENT, but for everyday cleaning, this REALLY does the job! Branch Basics multi-purpose concentrated cleaner makes cleaning simple, sustainable, safe and affordable. Just dilute with water and you’re all set to effectively tackle every room in the house and your laundry too! Branch basics is my preferred, I don’t know how it works so well, but it really does! I also heard Norwex cloths are great.

*15% off with code LEXI15

Conventional Laundry Detergent —> The Laundress Products or Branch Basics

Admittedly, this was one of the last swaps I’ve made. This product is nontoxic, biodegradable, and allergen-free. It’s also free of petroleum, phosphate, phthalates, and artificial color!

*15% off Branch Basics with code LEXI15

Chemical Sunscreen —> Mineral Sunscreen

Many of the sunscreens you’re probably most familiar with are known as chemical sunblocks. Do you want your skin absorbing anything that you can’t even pronounce? No, thanks.

Conventional Eye Make-Up Remover —> Beautycounter Eye-Make Up Remover

I used to use coconut oil, but sometimes that clogs up my pores. Before that, I used whatever junk I could find in the drugstore. I am LOVING Beautycounter’s new eye make-up remover. Just a quick shake activates this innovative dual-phase formula to completely erase long-wear and waterproof makeup. Made without mineral oil or silicones, it uses the power of coconut and macadamia oils to break down pigments and cornflower extract to soothe delicate skin. Safe for sensitive eyes and contact lens wearers, too!

Air Freshener —> The Laundress House Spray

A light scent to spruce up the house when I’m not diffusing essential oils (see below).  It doesn’t last super long, but adds a touch of freshness when needed. It’s made with a nontoxic formula is family, food, and pet safe. It has natural antibacterial properties and adds scent while removing odor!

Conventional Make-Up —> Beautycounter Make-Up

I’ve switched over most of my make-up to Beautycounter at this point, and aside from them being high-performing safer products, they have helped clear my skin so much in the past year!

  1. Bare Minerals Tinted Moisturizer —> Beautycounter Dew Skin with SPF
  2. Benefit Hoola Bronzer —> Bronzer in Dune
  3. Drug Store Maybelline Mascara —> Volumizing Mascara
  4. Tarte Eye Shadows —> Beautycounter Eye Shadow (Favorite Palette)
  5. Bare Minerals Blush —> Beautycounter Blush in Nectar
  6. Random Brands of Founation —> Beautycounter Foundation in Honey (Summer) and Sand (when paler)
  7. Mac Lipsticks —> Color Intense Lipsticks
  8. Glossier Boy Brow —> Beautycounter Brow Gel
  9. Random Make Up Removers —> Eye Make Up Remover and Make Up Remover Wipes

And that’s just the start to the list!

Gold Bond Body Lotion —> Primally Pure Body Butter and Primally Pure Body Oil

What we put ON our body is so important. Our skin is our biggest organ! Primally Pure’s natural body butter only contains ingredients that are safe enough to eat – high quality ingredients that work to restore the skin (your body’s largest organ) to a healthy and nourished state!

*10% off with code LEXI

Tampons —> Lunette (I prefer this over the Diva Cup)

A period cup is a non toxic (made from silicone), eco-friendly, affordable, and sustainable alternative to tampons and pads. You fold the cup up a certain way and insert the cup inside of your vagina (as you would a tampon), and it collects your uterus lining. You simply rinse it out every 12 hours and re-insert it, making it extremely sustainable and stress-free!

Crest Whitening Toothpaste —> Desert Essence Whitening Tea Tree Toothpaste

This was actually one of the first big swaps I made. I ditched the crap in the Crest toothpaste for this fabulous one! It works great. Brush your way to a brighter smile and fresher breath with this exclusive blend of Bamboo Stem Fiber and Baking Soda that helps fight stains. Sea Salt and Zinc Citrate help reduce plaque, while pure Wintergreen and Australian Tea Tree Oils freshen breath with a burst of minty flavor.

Dry Shampoo —> Primally Pure’s Texture Dry Shampoo

Instead of an aerosol can, often used for dry shampoo that uses butane and fragrance, this dry shampoo comes in a shaker bottle, is easy to apply, and it REALLY WORKS! There is an option for dark hair or light, so it doesn’t make your hair that ashy gray color. Simply shake a bit onto your scalp/roots of your hair, rub it into the hair, and you’re good to go with fresh looking, and feeling hair!

*10% off with code LEXI

Conventional Candles —> PHLUR or Essential Oil Diffuser

Instead of burning candles that are a combination of toxic ingredients, I’ve started diffusing essential oils in a diffuser! The house smells great. Favorite combo: Lavender and Eucalyptus! Buy candles? Opt for safer alternatives, like those that use a cotton or paper wick, and are either unscented or scented with essential oils, and look for ones that don’t contain any paraffin! Note: I don’t have a particular essential oil company that I love, I just try them all out!

*Code LEXI for 20% off your first Phlur Order

Bug Spray —> Primally Pure’s New Nature Spray

I’ve always hated the thought of spraying chemical bug spray ALL over my body. Primally Pure’s NEW all-natural insect repellent is made with nourishing + non-toxic ingredients. It’s free of DEET and full of organic ingredients that bugs can’t stand!

Plastic —> Glass

I am really trying to reduce the use of plastic in our home. A few major swaps I’ve made are:

Conventional Perfume —> Safer Ferfume

Did you know? Fragrance is being referred to as the new second-hand smoke? Ew. It’s only human to seek out pleasant smells and to try to eliminate unattractive scents from our environments. However, the immediate and long-term effects of synthetic fragrance exposure is hazardous to our health

This took me forever to say goodbye to my Coco Chanel! I finally found a safer perfume I like! I use PHLUR’s Hanami. No BHT, harmful fragrance, Parabens, phthalates.
