We’re going to let you in on a secret: making refried beans at home is so simple and well worth the (at most) 10 minutes it takes to make them. They are so much better than anything you can buy at a store pre-made! Our easy refried beans recipe makes a great addition to any Mexican inspired recipe, ranging from a spread in a layer dip, dolloped right on your taco or just dig in with tortilla chips! Oh, and it’s also gluten-free and vegan. Trust us, you need to make this ASAP!

Easy Homemade Refried Beans Recipe

The name refried beans is a little misleading as it makes you think that there is some sort of special deep frying happening twice with beans. But really refried beans means beans cooked twice! Homemade refried beans, with quality ingredients you control, is so much more flavorful and delicious than anything you can get store bought and it’s simply WORTH it to make. Plus, it takes less then 10 minutes! That’s so quick! And most of the ingredients are likely already in your pantry.

What do you need to make it

  • 2 tablespoons oil
  • garlic
  • chili powder
  • paprika
  • onion powder
  • salt and pepper
  • 1 can organic kidney beans or black beans
  • water or stock
  • lime
  • cilantro, for garnish (optional)
  • cheddar or cotija cheese, for garnish (optional)

Why we use canned beans

In our refried bean recipe, we start with canned beans. There are a lot of good options for purchasing canned beans that don’t containing additives, so using this option makes homemade refried beans super quick. If you have homemade cooked beans and wanted to use them in this recipe, that is fine. Just make sure that if they have seasoning in them already you may need to adjust the seasoning called for in this recipe. Use about 1-1/3 cup beans (or 15 ounces if you have a scale).

Easy Homemade Refried Beans Recipe

Cook Time 00:08 Total Time 00:10 Yields 1 cup

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons avocado oil
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon sea salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 1 14.5-ounce can organic kidney beans or black beans, rinsed and drained
  • ¼ cup water or stock
  • 1 teaspoon lime juice
  • cilantro, for garnish (optional)
  • 1/4 cup cheddar or cotija cheese, for garnish (optional)

Directions

  1. Heat oil in medium saucepan over medium heat. When hot add garlic and spices and let cook until fragrant, about 1 minute.
  2. Add the beans to the saucepan and ¼ cup water. Cover and let cook for 5 minutes.
  3. Take off heat and add lime juice. Mash to desired consistency using a potato masher or fork.
  4. Set aside until ready to use in recipe, or serve as a dip and top with cilantro and cheese.

Burger night has been taking place often around here. It’s an easy go-to meal for the summer, for sure! I like getting creative with toppings and different bun alternatives. Lettuce leaves as a bun, sweet potato buns, or grilled portobello mushroom caps (along with the obvious bacon, lettuce, tomato, onion, smashed avocado toppings). Deeee-lish.

I used to use a hamburger seasoning that I loved. When we finally moved and bought our grill, I checked out that old handy seasoning only to find the ingredients weren’t working for me anymore. Instead of listing ingredients, the end of the list said ‘and other natural flavor.’ I’d rather know exactly what’s in the spice mix I’m eating, personally.

Ingredients for Burger Seasoning

  • Garlic Powder
  • Paprika
  • Minced Dried Onion
  • Sea Salt
  • Black Pepper
  • Onion Powder
  • Mustard Powder
  • Oregano
  • Red pepper flakes
  • Cayenne pepper

How to Store Hamburger Seasoning

Store in a jar with a tight fitting lid. We often will reuse our empty store-bought spice jars for when we make our own blends. 

How long will it keep? So it’s not that spices go bad, it’s that spices lose their potency. It’s generally accepted that spices should last about a year once opened, but that’s assuming the store you are purchasing it from has a quick turnover rate and isn’t letting spices sit on the shelves for a while. If you are making this spice blend with spices that have been sitting on yourshelf for a while your blend will lose its potency quicker. At the LCK test kitchen, if spices have been around for more than a year we toss and refresh with new ones.

To use hamburger seasoning, mix in 1-2 tablespoons of the seasoning mix for every 1 pound of meat. Grill as desired!

  1. 1 tbsp garlic powder
  2. 1 tbsp paprika
  3. 1 tbsp minced dried onion
  4. 1 tsp fine Himalyan sea salt
  5. 1 tsp ground black pepper

Paleo Zesty Chicken Bites

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a bowl, combine almond meal/flour and all spices.
  3. In a separate bowl crack 1 egg and add 1/4 tsp water, whisk together well.
  4. Cut chicken into bite size pieces.
  5. Dredge the chicken pieces into the egg and toss until fully covered.
  6. Transfer chicken pieces to the spice mixture and coat evenly.
  7. Place on baking sheet; repeat until all are coated.
  8. Bake for 12-15 minutes then flip chicken bites over and cook for another 10-12 minutes until golden and crispy.
  9. Serve hot with your favorite dipping sauce!

Recipe Notes

  • *Depending on how many chicken pieces you use, you may need to increase the flour/spice mixture.
  • *Serving size will depends on how small or large you make the bites. Mine make about 20-25 chicken bites.
  • *Leave out parmesan cheese for fully dairy-free.
