30 Budget-Friendly Smoothie Freezer Packs

Smoothie freezer packs have been popular for years, and for good reason! They’re a great way to prepare a quick, nutritious breakfast in minutes. You can order premade smoothie packs via subscription, or purchase them by the pack at most grocery stores. 

We love smoothies and have tried and enjoyed a few smoothie pack options over the years, but ultimately they are SO expensive. So, we decided to create our own make-ahead smoothies. Bringing you the best of both worlds, they’re convenient and delicious yet don’t break the bank! 

Let’s break down the math: 

When originally published in 2018, our 30 days’ worth of smoothie packs came in at a minuscule $46.33, or about $1.50 per smoothie! Now, with our most recent calculations, all 30 packs cost about $60-70 or roughly $2 per smoothie.

One month’s worth of smoothie subscriptions can cost you about $250+! Yes, there is definitely a convenience factor. However, if you make your own, you control the ingredients and sweetness and it is SO much more affordable. 

Even with adjusted costs, making your own smoothie packs is a great way to reduce your grocery costs. Plus, you can make all 30 packs in an hour or less. We even timed ourselves to make sure!

5 Frozen Smoothie Pack Recipes

When creating these freezer pack smoothies it was important for us to use one shopping list, interchanging the ingredients as much as possible to keep things quick and easy. As a result, we came up with 5 smoothie recipes that all have their own unique flavor while using similar ingredients. 

We did our best to keep the ingredients as common as possible so they’re easy to find no matter where you shop. We even offer substitutions for the less common items like cacao nibs.

Tropical Smoothies

  • Frozen Tropical Fruit Mix: Use any tropical fruit mix you like best. 
  • Frozen Cauliflower: Use cauliflower florets or riced cauliflower. 
  • Banana: For the best taste and texture, use ripe bananas that are spotty but not yet mushy! 
  • Mixed Seeds: Use any seeds you like best and have on hand such as flax seeds, chia seeds, hemp seeds, or pumpkin seeds. 
  • Sweetener: Honey, maple syrup, Stevia, or any natural sweetener you like best will work. 
  • Coconut Milk: Use liquid coconut milk from the refrigerated section, not canned varieties. 

Skip the tropical mix

If the tropical mixed fruit at your store has bananas included skip it. Instead, get 16 ounces of mango, 16 ounces of pineapple, and 16 ounces of strawberries.

Verry Berry Smoothies

  • Frozen Mixed Berries: Use any combination of blackberries, raspberries, strawberries, or blueberries you like. 
  • Banana: For the best taste and texture, use ripe bananas that are spotty but not yet mushy! 
  • Sliced Almonds: Make sure they’re raw! 
  • Sweetener: Again, use honey, maple syrup, Stevia, or any sweetener you like best. 
  • Almond Milk: Use vanilla or unsweetened almond milk. 

Green Smoothies

  • Frozen Spinach: Use either store-bought frozen or spinach you froze at home.
  • Frozen Tropical Fruit Mix: Use any tropical fruit mix you like best. 
  • Banana: For the best taste and texture, use ripe bananas that are spotty but not yet mushy! 
  • Mixed Seeds: Use any seeds you like best and have on hand, such as flax seeds, chia seeds, hemp seeds, or pumpkin seeds. 
  • Almond Milk: Use vanilla or unsweetened almond milk. 

Chocolate Mint Smoothies

  • Banana: For the best taste and texture, use ripe bananas that are spotty but not yet mushy! 
  • Frozen Mixed Berries: Use any combination of blackberries, raspberries, strawberries, or blueberries you like. 
  • Cacao Powder: Feel free to substitute cocoa powder if preferred. 
  • Maple Syrup: Honey, Stevia, or any sweetener you prefer can also be used. 
  • Mint: Use mint extract or a small handful of fresh mint. 
  • Almond Milk: Use vanilla or unsweetened almond milk. 

Chocolate Coconut Smoothies

  • Banana: For the best taste and texture, use ripe bananas that are spotty but not yet mushy! 
  • Frozen Mixed Berries: Use any combination of blackberries, raspberries, strawberries, or blueberries you like. 
  • Frozen Cauliflower: Use cauliflower florets or riced cauliflower. 
  • Cacao Powder: Again, cocoa powder will also work. 
  • Maple Syrup: Honey, Stevia, or any other sweetener can also be used. 
  • Coconut Milk: Use liquid coconut milk from the refrigerated section, not canned varieties. 

Adjust The Ingredients

Feel free to use these smoothie ingredients as a base. Then, adjust the recipes to suit your preferences and dietary needs. For instance, you can use more or less sweetener in each smoothie. Or, you can add a scoop of protein powder to make them even more filling.

You can even swap the nuts for peanut butter or almond butter. Or, use coconut water or dairy milk instead of plant-based milk. There’s really no right or wrong way to make each smoothie!

How to Assemble and Use Premade Smoothie Packs

  1. Make the smoothie packs: For each individual smoothie flavor, place all the components except for the milk in a bag. Then, seal it, flattening the bag, and pressing out as much air as possible. 
  2. Repeat: Continue this process, making a total of 6 individual smoothie packs for each flavor, and store the packs in the freezer. 
  3. Blend the smoothies: Transfer all the ingredients from a single smoothie pack to a high-speed blender. Add the specified milk, and blend until creamy, adding more milk as needed. Enjoy immediately! 

Tips to Make and Use Smoothie Packs

  • Where should I shop? We recommend purchasing fruit at a large box store that offers organic frozen fruits like Costco, BJ’s, or Trader Joe’s. Amazon Fresh also has some great options for bulk fruit. 
  • Want to reduce waste and save even more money? Store your smoothie packs in reusable freezer-safe silicone bags! Then, instead of constantly purchasing disposable plastic freezer bags, you can simply rinse them out and use them over and over again. 
  • Want to speed up prep time? Use bag openers to hold the bags open, and create an assembly line, filling each bag quickly. 
  • Use labels and/or Sharpies to label and date each smoothie pack. This is especially useful when meal prepping and helps ensure you know what flavor you’re making and that none of the packs go bad!  
  • Best Blender? Hands down this one.
  • Have some leftover smoothie? We like to pour any leftover smoothie into a popsicle mold. Then, you can enjoy a frozen treat later. Smoothie popsicles are a big hit with kids! Keep in mind that smoothie pops are best consumed within a few days of making them.

FAQs 

How long do smoothie packs stay fresh? 

Freezer packs will last around one month. If you store them much longer than that, the bananas start to turn brown, and you’ll know it’s time to use them up right away! 

Can I blend a smoothie and freeze it? 

Technically, you can freeze smoothies for 1-2 days after blending. However, we don’t recommend it, because the taste and texture might change. Smoothies are best consumed right away! 

Should you thaw frozen fruit before making a smoothie? 

As long as you have a high-speed blender it’s not necessary! The frozen fruit will help create a thicker, creamier consistency.

Ingredients
  

For Tropical Smoothie (make 6 each):

  • 1 cup 5 ounces frozen tropical fruit mix
  • 1/2 cup 2 ounces frozen cauliflower
  • 1/2 banana sliced
  • 1 tablespoon mixed seeds
  • 1 tablespoon sweetener of choice honey, maple syrup or other
  • 1-1/2 cups coconut milk for blending

For Very Berry Smoothie (make 6 each):

  • 1 cup 5 ounces frozen mixed berries
  • 1/2 banana sliced
  • 1/4 cup sliced almonds
  • 1 tablespoon sweetener of choice honey, maple syrup or other
  • 1-1/2 cup cups almond milk for blending

For Green Smoothie (make 6 each):

  • 1 cup 5 ounces frozen spinach
  • 1/2 cup 2 ounces frozen tropical fruit mix
  • 1/2 banana sliced
  • 1/4 cup mixed seeds
  • 1 cup almond milk for blending

For Chocolate Mint (make 6 each):

  • 1 banana sliced
  • 1 cup 5 ounces frozen mixed berries
  • 1 tablespoon cacao powder
  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup
  • Drop of mint extract or small handful of fresh mint
  • 1 cup almond milk for blending

For Chocolate Coconut (make 6 each):

  • 1 banana sliced
  • 1/2 cup 2 ounces frozen mixed berries
  • 1/2 cup 2 ounces frozen cauliflower florets
  • 2 tablespoons cacao powder
  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup
  • 1 cup coconut milk for blending

Instructions

To Make Smoothie Freezer Packs:

  • For each individual smoothie flavor place all components except for almond/coconut milk in plastic bag and flatten and press any air out of the bag. You can use a straw to suck the air out, just be careful not to do this if you’re using any cacao powder.
  • Repeat this recipe for a total of  6 smoothies per flavor. Place in the freezer until ready to use.

To Blend Smoothies:

  • Combine all ingredients, including specified milk, in a high-speed blender. Add protein powder, if using (see note)
  • Blend until creamy, adding additional almond milk if necessary.

  • If the tropical mixed fruit at your store has banana included skip it and instead get 16 ounces mango, 16 ounces pineapple, and 16 ounces strawberry.

  1. I’m curious why you don’t use any sort of protein in these? Without it I don’t think it will sustain you very long.

  5. Hi! Looking to make these in advance for postpartum, so I’m wondering if I leave the banana out and just add when I’m ready to blend, could these last longer than a month? Thank you!

    1. We always do unsweetened in our home, but you can do what works for you here with what you regularly have at home.

  6. We have nut and banana allergies. Any suggestions for substitutions for almond milk and almonds in the berry smoothie? (I imagine we can just omit banana?) We can’t do coconut milk either. Can we do regular milk?

    1. Most definitely use whatever milk your family can have! Sub in another nut if you want, or omit altogether. If you omit the banana you’ll lose out on the sweetness and some of the creaminess. Sometimes frozen cauliflower works in its place, but won’t replace the sweetness.
