These chocolate energy bites are packed with ingredients said to help support a mother’s milk supply, and are so chocolatey and delicious. Made with cocoa powder and nut butter, they’re nutrient-dense and perfect to make-ahead of time.

These no bake lactation energy bites are the perfect snack to have on hand in the fridge for all new moms. They are loaded with healthy whole ingredients that can help naturally support a woman’s milk supply and keep hunger at bay. But don’t worry, anybody can eat these chocolate oat balls because they are delicious and filling bite-size snack!

What are lactation energy bites?

Lactation bites are plain and simple a no-bake snack made with ingredients that are said to support a woman’s milk supply. According to KellyMom.com (a popular and useful source for breastfeeding women), certain substances are anecdotally helpful in supporting or increasing a woman’s milk supply. They can be both herbal (such as fenugreek or fennel seed), but more popularly other common kitchen ingredients, such as oats, flaxseed, and brewer’s yeast. These are known as galactagogues! While scientifically there may not be a ton of fool-proof data that says galactagogues absolutely increase milk supply, what we do know is that these healthy additions to cookies can’t hurt, and most definitely have beneficial health properties! They also make a great gift to bring to new moms!

What’s in them?

  • Rolled Oats (make sure to buy gluten-free if you are intolerant)
  • Nut-Butter or Sunflower Butter
  • Honey
  • Cocoa Powder + Chocolate Chips
  • Ground Flaxseed
  • Chia Seeds
  • Brewer’s Yeast

How to Make Them

And this is our favorite part! Most energy bites rely on dates for sweetness and for consistency which means they need to be made in a food processor. These however do not: which means to make them, all you have to do is mix up the ingredients in a bowl! It really is super simple.

Once the ingredients are fully combined, roll them into balls and store!

What is Brewer’s Yeast and Do I Need It?

Brewer’s Yeast is a fungus, often derived as a by-product when brewing beer. Beer of course is often made with wheat, which would mean that brewer’s yeast can contain gluten. However, there are several brands that are gluten-free, just make sure to check the labels. Brewer’s yeast comes in the form of a powder and can be easily purchased either in a local health food store or on Amazon. 

Each brand can vary in terms of taste. Some have more of an after taste than others. Those labeled as debittered have less of an aftertaste, but depending on how fine your taste buds are you still might be able to taste it.

If you do not want to buy brewer’s yeast for this recipe and wish to leave it out, you can do that. You can replace it with an extra tablespoon of flax seed.


How to Store Lactation Bites

Store these bites in a covered container for up to 2 weeks in the refrigerator. They can also be stored in the freezer for up to 3 months.

They are stable at room temperature, so they are perfectly safe to be out of the refrigerator for a few hours if need be, though they are a bit softer at room temperature depending on the type of nut butter you use.

CHOCOLATE NO BAKE LACTATION BITES

Ingredients
  

  • 2 cups old-fashioned oats see note
  • 1 cup nut-butter or sunflower butter
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 1/2 cup mini chocolate chips
  • 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 1/3 cup ground flaxseed
  • ΒΌ cup chia seeds
  • 1/4 cup brewer's yeast see note

Instructions

  • Add all ingredients to a large bowl. Mix together with a spatula until fully combined.
  • Roll dough into heaping tablespoon-sized balls.
  • Refrigerate for up to 2 weeks.

Notes

  1. If you are gluten-intolerant, make sure to check the label on the rolled oats that they are certified gluten-free.
  2. If you wish to skip out on the brewer's yeast, omit it and replace it with an extra tablespoon of flax.

    I am breastfeeding my 3rd baby and had a serious dip in supply following a bout with mastitis. I am eating these like crazy and they are saving me!! I’ve done lactation cookies in the past, but I do not have time for baking these days, with 3 kids under 4. Luckily, these are better and a million times faster and easier. Thanks so much!!
