This gluten-free Roasted Fig and Caramelized Onion Pizza is a sweet and savory dream come true. It’s made with a gluten-free pizza crust layered with fresh, juicy figs, caramelized onions, walnuts, honey, and more!
Easy Gluten-Free Pizza Recipe
Figs are one of my favorite things to eat in the summer. Mission figs, black figs, tiger figs, you name it. Not only are they delicious, sweet, and juicy, but they’re also gorgeous!
They’re like healthy candy… and wait… they’re perfect on pizza.
This gluten-free roasted fig and caramelized onion pizza is packed with fresh, tasty, sweet, and savory ingredients. It’s simple to put together, paleo, dairy-free, and a total hit with everyone who tries it!
Ingredients Needed
- Pizza Crust: You’ll need one batch of my Gluten-Free Pizza Crust for this recipe. Feel free to double it if you’re making more than one pizza! It’s the BEST crust!
- Figs: Fresh figs are best.
- Onions: I like to use yellow onions to make my Caramelized Onions!
- Butter: To caramelize the onions. Feel free to use ghee instead, if preferred.
- Walnuts: Chopped walnuts add a delicious nutty crunch to the pizza. If you want to give them an extra layer of flavor, try toasting them first.
- Honey: A drizzle of raw honey adds just the right amount of sweetness.
- Olive Oil: To soften the pizza crust, just a touch.
- Salt: I use fine sea salt to enhance the flavors of the fig pizza.
How to Make Caramelized Onion and Roasted Fig Pizza
This scrumptious gluten-free pizza is quick to prepare and tastes like you got it at a fancy restaurant! Here’s a quick recipe summary:
- Make the crust: Use my Gluten-Free Pizza Dough recipe to make one batch of crust, omitting the garlic granules and Italian seasoning. Bake as directed with no toppings. Alternatively, use any crust from the store!
- Caramelize the onions: In a skillet, heat butter and cook the sliced onions until caramelized. Check out my Caramelized Onions recipe for more details.
- Add the toppings: Once the crust is cooked, drizzle it with olive oil, then add on the caramelized onions, figs, walnuts, and honey. Sprinkle with salt, then serve.
What Does Fig Pizza Taste Like?
Fig pizza is the perfect combination of sweet and savory. It blends sweet flavors from figs, caramelized onions, and honey. That sweetness is offset slightly by the nutty, savory flavors of the butter, walnuts, olive oil, and salt.
Are Dried Figs Good on Pizza?
Technically, yes, but if you can get your hands on fresh figs, I definitely recommend doing that.
There’s just nothing quite like biting into a sweet and juicy bite of fresh fig.
Now, if you can’t find fresh figs for your gluten-free pizza recipe, you can use dried. Just chop them into smaller, bite-sized pieces because they have a much more concentrated flavor.
Tips and Notes
- Skip the garlic and Italian seasoning. My Gluten-Free Pizza Crust recipe calls for both garlic granules and Italian seasoning, but I recommend leaving them out for this recipe. Those flavors don’t meld with the other ones on this fig pizza.
- Pre-bake the crust. You’ll add the toppings after the crust is already baked so they stay nice and fresh.
- Add other toppings. Try adding a crumble of feta cheese, blue cheese, or gorgonzola OR bulk it up with fresh arugula or sautéed mushrooms.
- Make it heartier. Make your pizza a little more filling with a sprinkle of crispy bacon, crumbled chorizo, or prosciutto.
