The best breakfast side dish, these Air Fryer Home Fries are really easy-to-make and perfectly seasoned. They’re made healthier by using less oil (and less hands-on cooking time) thanks to the air fryer!
How to Make Home Fries in the Air Fryer
Crispy and perfectly seasoned, these Air Fryer Home Fries are a great side dish to the best breakfast ever. And without a doubt, using the air fryer to cook them is our new favorite method. We’ve known for a while that an air fryer is a great appliance to cook several different recipes (like these chicken wings!), so we kind of had a feeling we’d love home fries cooked in them as well.
I feel like there are two different types of people out there: those who like their home fries crisp, and those who like their home fries very soft and tender. Well, the air fryer makes home fries that are a combination of these both, which makes these the home fries for everybody! The potatoes have crispy edges, yet are so tender and soft in the middle, making this the best method to cook home fries!
Ingredients Needed
Here is an overview of the ingredient list. Keep scrolling for the full recipe.
- Potatoes (more on what kind, below)
- Onion
- Salt + Pepper
- Spices
- Avocado Oil (or other cooking spray)
How to Customize It
I left the recipe for the home fries itself pretty plain: with just potatoes and onions. However, there is plenty of room to spice things up, like adding bell peppers or even bacon! Feel free to add in what you love in your home fries! There is a note in the recipe about when to add the peppers if you do plan to use them.
What Type of Air Fryer to Use
We’ve tried quite a few air fryers over the years. We’ve have and use this basket style, this Instant Pot air fryer attachment and this toaster-style air fryer! They all work great! It’s quite a personal preference which you choose. Do you want/need a new toaster? Do you have space for a solo new appliance? All these things will go into consideration when shopping and deciding which of those will work for you.
What there is to be aware of about air fryers though is that some of them can be quite small. If yours has a small capacity, you may have to make the air home fries in batches. Though I’m guessing if you’ve been using your air fryer for a while, you’ve already learned that.
Cooking it in batches, if you have a small capacity air fryer, ensures there is plenty of air circulation around the wings so they can get crispy. If you do need to do it in batches, at the very end you can put all of the potatoes back in the basket and cook for one minute to warm them all back up!
Best Potatoes for Home Fries
You can technically cook any potato as home fries, but there is no doubt one that we recommend over all the others.
We love yukon gold for home fries because they have a good flavor, can get crispy on the outside and are super creamy on the inside.
Our second best choice is to use russets if you cannot find yukon gold.
When buying potatoes, steer clear of any potatoes with soft or dark spots visible on the outside. This can indicate that there may be a rotten or spoiled section inside of the potato, and we obviously want to try to avoid this. And of course, avoid potatoes with any sprouted eyes or green skin.
What to Serve with Air Fryer Home Fries
Home fries are of course a weekend breakfast staple! Serve with eggs or serve it up with leftover meat (or bacon) and veggies. Here are some of our favorite brunch recipes that can be served with home fries:
- Saucy Chorizo Skillet Baked Eggs
- Bacon and Sweet Potato Frittata
- Chard and Potato Leek Frittata
- Easy Pizza Scramble
- How to Make Instant Pot Hard Boiled Eggs
- Breakfast Prep Baked Egg Cups
- Egg Muffin Cups (Tex-Mex Style With Turkey!)
How to Store for Meal Prep
Honestly one of my favorite aspects of this recipe is that making a big batch on the weekend means you have breakfast potatoes for meal prep all week! And these don’t just need to be for breakfast either.
These potatoes will keep well all week in the refrigerator stored in an airtight container.
