What Type of Potatoes are Best

Russett potatoes are our top choice because they have a high starch and low moisture content, which means really fluffy insides.

When buying potatoes, steer clear of any potatoes with soft or dark spots on the outside. This can indicate that there is a rotten or spoiled part inside of the potato, and we obviously want to try to avoid this since you won’t know it until after it’s been cooked. And of course, avoid potatoes with any sprouted eyes.

Tips for Setting up a Baked Potato Bar

When you are thinking about your baked potato bar menu first start with the number of people you’ll be serving, and then scale up. Here are some suggestions for amounts. Scroll down for specific suggestions on options to serve.

For a couple or small family:

  • 1 baked potato per person
  • side salad
  • 1-2 main options (shredded meat, homemade chili, crisp bacon, roasted veggies, etc)
  • 1-2 garnish options (shredded cheese, sauces, herbs, etc)

For a large family or small party:

  • 1 baked potato per person, plus a few extra
  • side salad
  • 2-3 main options (shredded meat, homemade chili, crisp bacon, roasted veggies, etc)
